MEP Engineering
When tech startup Audible.com purchased a property that includes a two century-old religious building to use as office space, we balanced respect for the original structure with its new, modern purpose.
Our work involved MEP design services for the core and shell infrastructure and tenant fit-out at 15 James Street in Newark. The project includes renovating the historic Second Presbyterian Church into new office space for Audible.com.
The cornerstone of the former church was laid in 1810, the original stucco finish giving the original church the nickname “Old Blue Church.” The old auditorium featured 26 stained glass windows of various sizes depicting outstanding local citizens, spiritual leaders, and images from the Bible.
Though the church has not served as an active parish since 1995, we ensured that no changes were made to the exterior of the building, despite the need to add new floors and mezzanines.
Our firm prepared plans and specifications for the new HVAC, electrical, fire alarm, plumbing, and sprinkler systems for office areas that included a full kitchen/cafeteria, gym, telecommunications room and food storage room.
