For more than three generations, the vast, marble concourse of New York City’s Grand Central Termi­nal has been a cross­roads for commuters, travelers, and sightse­ers.

But the mechanical systems that heat, ventilate, and air condition the railroad station-while highly inno­vative in their day-are badly worn after 75 years of service. Though pri­or efforts have been made to repair parts of these systems, a thorough reconditioning is now needed to en­sure continued operation.
