The Building Energy Exchange has published an article by Charles Copeland and Tristan Schwartzman titled “Building on NYC’s Leadership in Geothermal Ground Source Energy.” The article was requested in light of Goldman Copeland’s pivotal role in creating the City of New York’s pioneering online prescreening tool for geothermal ground source energy, and the firm’s involvement in replicating that tool for Westchester County: Westchester GeoPossibilities. The New York City tool enables property owners to prescreen quickly and at no cost the potential of any property in New York City – about 900,000 lots – for geothermal ground source energy. Westchester GeoPossibilities does the same for every lot in the county. A more detailed investigation of specific properties is required before implementation.
The two online prescreening tools together provide a template for the rest of the nation – for large cities and for suburban and more rural areas – at a time when increasing the use of renewable energy sources is of vital national importance. Property owners in New York City and Westchester should take full advantage of these existing tools.
A more technical article on the topic by Charles Copeland and Tristan Schwartzman was published in August by ASHRAE Journal titled “Developing Geothermal Screening Web Tools.” To speak with Charlie or Tristan about geothermal ground source energy or other engineering needs, contact Sarah Ingber at [email protected].
